Ultra-Running Coaching & Community

Train with a Coach
Who Lives for the Trails

Personal ultra-running coaching rooted in Prescott, Arizona — where Southwest trails demand everything and give even more back.

Southwest trails. Real mileage. A coach who actually runs them.

Who this is for

Every runner has a different reason for hitting the trail.

Skyline Ultra coaching meets you exactly where you are — whether you're stepping off the road for the first time or targeting your next Southwest podium.

The Road Runner Ready for More

You've run road races and you're curious about trail. You want a coach who can bridge that gap honestly — teaching terrain, nutrition, and gear without the overwhelm.

Building to Your First 50K or 50-Miler

You have a race circled on your calendar. You need a structured plan, a coach who answers your questions, and someone to tell you when to back off before your body makes that decision for you.

Competitive Athletes Targeting Southwest Races

Whiskey Basin. Javelina Jundred. Black Canyon Ultras. If these are your races, you want a coach who has run these courses and knows the demands of high-desert ultra racing firsthand.

If you're tired of generic apps and anonymous plans, this coaching is built differently — a real coach, real Southwest terrain, real accountability.

The story behind Skyline Ultra

I didn't move to Prescott for a lifestyle change. I moved here because this is where the running is. The Granite Dells at sunrise. The Bradshaw Mountains holding snow into April. Race courses that punish you in ways no road ever will, and hand back something you can't quite name.

Before Prescott, I was training in San Diego — good running, strong community, but something missing. The moment I started running these trails, I understood. There's a version of this sport that only makes sense when your shoes are on desert granite, your lungs are working at elevation, and you're navigating terrain that doesn't care how fast you ran last weekend.

Skyline Ultra is coaching built from that reality. Not a platform. Not a plan you download and run alone. A coach who is out on these same trails, who knows Whiskey Basin the way you need to know it before race day, and who is genuinely invested in getting you to your race — ready.

What this coaching is

Not a marketplace. Not an app. A coach who chose the Southwest, knows your races from the inside, and is here for your specific race.

The coaching method

How the work actually gets done

Every phase of coaching is built around the specific demands of Southwest ultra racing — not a template, not a generic plan dropped in an app.

Phase 1

Intake, Race Selection & Goal Setting

We start with a real conversation — your history, your goals, your life outside of running. Race selection matters here: Whiskey Basin, Black Canyon, and Javelina Jundred each have completely different demands, and your plan needs to be built for the race you're actually running, not a generic 50K template.

  • Training history assessment
  • Race-specific course analysis
  • Realistic timeline and goal calibration
  • Schedule fit and weekly capacity

Phase 2

Your Training Plan, Built for This Terrain

Every plan accounts for Southwest-specific variables: elevation gain, heat, rocky technical terrain, and the altitude exposure that comes with training and racing at 5,000–7,000 feet. The plan adapts as you do.

  • Week-by-week structured training
  • Vert and terrain-specific workouts
  • Heat and altitude acclimatization guidance
  • Nutrition and fueling strategy
  • Recovery and injury-prevention protocols

Phase 3

Ongoing Coaching & Real Accountability

The plan is a tool, not a contract. Life happens, your body talks back, and conditions change. Regular check-ins mean the coaching stays responsive — not a set-it-and-forget-it subscription, but a real coaching relationship through to race day.

  • Regular check-in calls and messaging
  • Plan adjustments based on how training is going
  • Pre-race strategy sessions
  • Race-day pacing and execution guidance

The trail doesn't adapt to you.
Your training plan does.

Responsive coaching from intake to finish line

What coaching includes

Coaching built around your race, your schedule, your terrain.

Every coaching relationship starts with a conversation about where you are and where you want to go. What follows is specific to you — not a plan pulled off a shelf.

Start a conversation

No commitment required to start the conversation.

Custom training plan

Designed around your race, your training history, and your available weekly hours — not a generic template with your name on it.

Race-specific course knowledge

Whiskey Basin, Javelina Jundred, Black Canyon Ultras, and more Southwest races — your coach has run or crewed these courses and knows the details that matter.

Terrain and elevation programming

Southwest trails mean vert, rock, heat, and altitude. Your plan builds the specific strengths these courses demand.

Regular check-ins and messaging

Coaching isn't a one-time plan drop. Regular communication means the plan stays aligned with how training is actually going.

Nutrition and fueling strategy

Desert ultra racing has specific fueling demands. We work through your nutrition approach as part of training, not as an afterthought the week before the race.

Pre-race preparation and race-day strategy

A detailed race-day execution plan: pacing, aid station strategy, crew and pacer coordination, and contingency planning for when things don't go to plan.

Community and trail connections

Access to the Skyline Ultra community — runners and trail enthusiasts building toward Southwest races, sharing local routes, and showing up on race day.

The race terrain that shapes the coaching

Southwest ultras are a different world. Your coaching should be built for that world.

Whiskey Basin Trail Run

Prescott, AZ

Rocky granite terrain, sustained elevation gain, iconic Prescott landscape. A home-course advantage worth training for.

Javelina Jundred

McDowell Mountain, AZ

One of the Southwest's most celebrated 100-milers. Desert heat, loop format, and a relentless psychological test.

Black Canyon Ultras

Mayer, AZ

Technical desert singletrack along the Black Canyon Trail. Point-to-point racing demands navigation and efficient pacing.

Common questions

Honest answers to the questions runners actually ask

Do I need prior trail running experience to work with Skyline Ultra?

Not at all. Road runners making the jump to trail are a large part of this coaching practice. The transition involves more than just running on dirt — technique, gear, nutrition, and mindset all shift. The coaching covers all of it, starting from where you actually are.

I'm not targeting a Southwest race — can I still get coached?

Yes. The coaching draws on Southwest terrain and experience because that's where the coach trains and races, but the principles of ultra-running preparation apply across regions. If you're targeting a race elsewhere and want coaching from someone with deep ultra experience, reach out and we'll talk through whether it's a good fit.

What does the coaching process look like day-to-day?

After an initial intake conversation, you receive a structured training plan built for your race and schedule. Ongoing coaching includes regular check-ins — messaging or calls depending on what works for you — with plan adjustments as training progresses. You're not downloading a plan and running alone.

I've used generic running apps before. How is this different?

An app gives you a plan. Coaching gives you a coach. The difference shows up in the specifics — when your training isn't going as planned, when you have a question about a workout, when your race is 10 weeks out and you're second-guessing your peak mileage. Those moments need a person, not an algorithm.

Is Skyline Ultra only for serious competitive runners?

No. The coaching works for runners at all experience levels — finishing your first 50K and competing for a podium at Javelina Jundred are both legitimate goals. What matters is that you're serious about your training and want a genuine coaching relationship, whatever the goal looks like.

How do I get started?

Send a message through the contact form below. There's no commitment in that first conversation — it's a chance to talk through where you are, what you're targeting, and whether the coaching is the right fit.

Still have a question? The fastest answer is a direct message.
